It’s been just over a month now, and something in the rhythm of this whole practice has begun to settle in. The site, the Flâneur’s Journal, this Frame & Verse newsletter—each piece has become part of a larger creative pulse. What began as an idea has turned into a habit, and that habit has turned into a way of moving through the world. I’ve been out shooting more often, and with the weather shifting toward spring, I can feel that familiar pull to be out there even more. Returning to the Same Streets I keep finding myself drawn back to two neighbourhoods I regularly haunt, Commercial Drive and Main Street. In street photography, this is a gift. Familiarity with the architecture, the atmosphere, the people—it all sharpens your presence. You stop searching for photographs and start noticing them. The streets begin to reveal their own timing, their own moods, their own small rituals. You learn where the light falls at certain hours, where people linger, where the unexpected tends to happen. I’ll still wander elsewhere, of course, but this spring I’m planning to add a third location in Vancouver proper and a fourth in the downtown core. Expanding the orbit without abandoning the places that have already taught me how to see. A Changing City Vancouver’s Gastown used to be a reliable place to wander with a camera, but the atmosphere has changed over the years. The ongoing homelessness and addiction crisis has reshaped the neighbourhood, and while summer still brings a wave of tourists, it doesn’t create the kind of moments I’m drawn to anymore. The Downtown Eastside once had a rough‑around‑the‑edges character that still felt approachable, but lately my last few outings have been marked by people in medical distress and emergency responses unfolding right in front of me. It’s a heavy reality, and not a space I feel comfortable working in now. Chinatown, which used to be one of the most vibrant and photographically rich areas in the city, has also been pulled into the same challenges. Many merchants no longer keep goods outside, both for safety and theft reduction, and the visual texture that once defined the streets has thinned out. With frequent break‑ins and long‑standing businesses closing their doors, the neighbourhood feels quieter and more hollow than it once was. It’s difficult to witness, and it has changed the way the area photographs entirely. Such a loss for a place that used to be so full of life. It’s all a reminder that cities evolve, and our relationship with them evolves too. I’ll speak with a few fellow togs and see what corners they’ve been walking lately—some street photographers often trade locations the way writers trade favourite cafés. How Many Streets Does a Photographer Need? Most street photographers eventually settle into a pattern of two to five regular haunts. Enough variety to keep the eye awake, but not so many that every walk feels like starting from scratch. Some photographers walk the same single street for years, learning its seasons, its shadows, its characters. Others rotate through a handful of neighbourhoods depending on mood or light. What matters isn’t the number of locations—it’s the relationship you build with each one. A Question for Your Own Practice As I expand my own map this spring, I find myself wondering about the habits of other walkers, other observers, other flâneurs. How many locations do you regularly meander—and what keeps you returning to them?
