In the Frame This Month

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Frame & Verse, a newsletter for those who move through the city with a camera in hand and a quiet attentiveness in their step. Curated by Jean‑Francois — street photographer, flâneur, and lover of the poetic moment — this series invites you to see the streets with fresh eyes, to linger in ambiguity, and to find presence in the fleeting gestures of everyday life.

Although this first edition opens with poetry, Frame & Verse will always remain rooted in Street Photography. Most issues will be two‑thirds to three‑quarters focused on street photography — craft, practice, philosophy, and the art of the frame — with the remaining space devoted to poetry and flânerie as they deepen and enrich the photographic experience. I chose to begin with a poem because it pairs naturally with my first two blog posts “Photograph Without a Plan: Embracing Serendipity on the Streets - Part 1 of 2” and “Photograph Without a Plan: Living in the Present - Part 2 of 2“, both of which explore the emotional and perceptual foundations of seeing.

“Dawn, Unreal City”

Inspired by T.S. Eliot, written by Jean-Francois Cleroux

Beneath the sodium hush,
the city exhales—
pavement slick with last night’s rain,
windows blinking awake,
a hush before the first tram’s sigh.

I walk—
shadows lengthen,
faces half-formed in the blue hour,
each step a question,
each breath a promise not yet broken.

Here, in the hush before commerce,
the city is neither real nor dream—
a corridor of possibility,
where hope and fatigue
share the same bench at the station.

I lift my lens—
light pools in puddles,
a woman’s silhouette dissolves
into the mist of her own thoughts.
We are all unfinished,
waiting for the sun to name us.

Poetic Seeing in Urban Spaces

To practice poetic seeing in the city is to move beyond the surface, to dwell in the ambiguity and emotional resonance of the everyday. Street photography, at its best, is not merely documentary—it is a form of visual poetry, a way of attending to the world that is both analytical and affective.

Drawing on the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard, Michel de Certeau, and the urbopoetics of contemporary scholars, poetic seeing is an art of inhabiting: it is to walk the city as a flâneur, attuned to its rhythms, textures, and fleeting encounters. The photographer becomes a participant-observer, open to serendipity and surprise, crafting images that are as much about feeling as about fact.

In the urban dawn, the city is at its most ambiguous. The boundaries between public and private, past and present, are blurred. The blue hour’s light softens edges, rendering the familiar strange and the strange familiar. Here, the camera becomes a tool for sensemaking, for capturing not just what is seen, but what is felt—the hush of anticipation, the ache of solitude, the quiet hope of renewal.

Street photography’s power lies in its embrace of emotion, ambiguity, and presence. A great street photograph raises questions rather than answers; it invites the viewer into a space of contemplation, where meaning is provisional and layered. The city at dawn is a threshold, a site of becoming. To see poetically is to recognize the city’s capacity for both alienation and connection, for both loss and possibility.

Photography Challenge — Reading the City Through “Dawn’s Emotional Tone”

Set out before sunrise. Walk slowly, without a fixed destination, allowing yourself to be guided by curiosity and intuition. As the city awakens, notice the interplay of light and shadow, the gestures of early risers, the textures of wet pavement and fogged glass. Seek out moments that evoke an emotional response—solitude, anticipation, tenderness, ambiguity. Use your camera to frame not just what you see, but what you feel. Experiment with different perspectives: crouch low to capture reflections, shoot through windows or doorways to create layers, play with negative space to evoke quietude. After your walk, review your images and select one that best encapsulates the emotional tone of the morning. Pair it with a brief reflection or verse..

Flânerie Quest

Let chance guide your route—follow a stranger for a block, turn at the sound of a distant bell, pause at a café window. Record your observations in a notebook or voice memo. What stories emerge from the city’s silence?

Contemplative Question

What does it mean to be present in a city that is always becoming—where every dawn is both an ending and a beginning? How might you use your camera, or your words, to dwell in the spaces between certainty and ambiguity, between seeing and being seen?

Photography Challenge Note

I have to laugh as I write this first challenge. While assembling the newsletter I went hunting through my archive for suitable dawn images—only to discover there aren’t any. Not a single one. I’m simply not out shooting at that hour; by nature I’m a late‑night wanderer, and my work reflects it. In fact, it’s 3:09 AM as I type this.

Still, I’ll take it as a sign. If I’m asking you to meet the city at first light, I should do the same. So I’m accepting the challenge: in March I’ll rise early and see what the streets reveal in those quiet, hesitant hours.

Yes—there will absolutely be a latte involved.

You might wonder how I know the mood of the city at dawn if I rarely shoot then. I’ve spent many mornings awake in other cities, playing the flâneur without a camera—walking, sitting at a café, simply observing. Those early hours are a wonderful way to begin the day; my mind, however, rarely feels ready to shoot right away.
