RECENT RASH OF ROGUE, FAKE AND BAD ANTI SPYWARE
Once again there is a recent rash of new Spyware and Viruses that will try to entice the user into clicking on a Pop Up Button by pretending to be Windows Security or Spyware Program. A pop-up will appear stating that your system may be infected with Spyware (or a Virus) and will ask if you want to check your system. It may ask to Scan your system or to Clean your system. Or the pop up will offer to scan your system for Free or may even offer to let you try the program for free! These new Anti Spyware Programs are FAKE or simply bad and do not do much. Some of these are even spyware themselves.
FAKE or BAD Anti Spyware Programs! These programs will put Spyware on your system and tell you that it found it or it may just say it found spyware but will never actually do anything. These programs will hijack your system and will force you to pay for the real version. It will nag and annoy you until you pay even if you just want to remove it.
Never install anything from a Windows Pop Up or a Windows System Security Message or even from any FREE Web Sites unless you know what you are doing or have asked a computer professional for guidance first!!
Never, ever Pay for any of these services!! The pests are fake because they want to get your Credit Card Number!! Many of these have come from Russian registered web sites. Some of these include the following listed below but there are now over 100 registered rogue spyware programs. Most of these rogue programs are named to sound real or similar to real existing programs.

You may want to check out your anti spyware program to see if its on the SpywareWarrior.com list. If it is you may need help getting rid of it but get it replaced. If you do not have anti spyware software, get it now. Spyware can trash your computer, can steal your passwords and bank account information and can be used to steal your identity.
Always get advise about products you purchase for your computer. There may be better products available at lower prices or more feature rich products for the same price. You computer consultant can advise you if a product is right for you.

WINDOWS 98 is DEAD Yes it's official, Microsoft has dropped full support for Windows 98 and for Windows Millennium as of this past July 2006. This means that Microsoft will no longer make fixes or patches or security updates for these products. Other companies like software companies will now no longer make or test programs on the Windows 98 platform nor will hardware companies make Windows 98 Drivers. If you have an older computer, time for a new one. If you have a fast Pentium 3 or a Pentium 4 you may be able to Install Windows XP (Get some help with this!). If you are thinking about getting the new Microsoft Operating System called Windows Vista, you will need a NEW fairly high end computer!! EWIDO ANTI SPYWARE One of our top rated Anti Spyware Programs EWIDO (great but slightly over priced) has been purchased by GriSoft (An excellent Anti Virus Program Company). Hopefully GriSoft will continue doing justice to this exceptional program and hopefully will lower the price to be in line with other quality anti spyware programs. WINDOWS VISTA! Besides the great new built in security features of Windows Vista, the only great new touted technology Vista was to offer was a new file system called WinFS. Microsoft has had some issues with this new file system and they have announced that they will not make this new file system available to home users when they release Windows Vista to the public. VANCOUVER MAN ARRESTED FOR STEALING WI-FI! For more than three months this man drove nearby to a coffee shop and used their internet services for free. The owners got fed up and finally called the police and the man was arrested and charged with theft of services. The court case is pending. We will try to keep you posted on the outcome of this. |

SECURITY SUITES There are numerous Security Suites out there including some from Norton's, McAfee, ZoneAlarm and others. These security suites try to provide you with complete system security often offering Anti Virus, Anti Spam, Anti Spyware and a System Firewall. Most of these suites are lacking in certain areas and many suites like Norton's Internet Security Suite 2006 can bog down your system to a crawl. None of the suites (or any security software for that matter) can fully protect you. We have tested several and from our hands on service of clients machines we have identified ZONEALARM INTERNET SECURITY SUITE 6.5 as our preferred suite. But, even with this product installed you may have some Spyware Issues creeping in. This suite was recently given the "PC Magazine Editor's Choice" Award. Read on... FREE ANTI SPYWARE PROGRAMS There are many free anti spyware programs, the most common being Lavasoft's Ad-Aware Personal Edition 1.06 (www.lavasoftusa.com), Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 (www.spybot.com), SUPERAntiSpyware Edition 3.2 (www.superantispyware.com), Ewido Network's Free On-Line Spyware Scan (www.ewido.net), and Microsoft's Windows Defender Beta 2 (www.microsoft.com). Our favorite here is LAVASOFT'S AD-AWARE PERSONAL EDITION 1.06. Microsoft's Windows Defender is still in Beta and we have seen some issue with it. We absolutely love EWIDO NETWORK'S FREE ON-LINE SCAN. It doe an excellent job and we use it as a secondary scan of home computers when we think there are on-going issues with a system. Because it is an on-line scan, it does not protect you at all times. COMMERCIAL ANTI SPYWARE PROGRAMS The top rated programs are Ewido Network's Anti Spyware 4.0 (www.ewido.net), Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.0 (www.webroot.com), and PC Tools Spyware Doctor 4.0 (www.pctools.com. Note that both Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor received PC Magazines Editor's Choice for September 2006. We like all three of these products but have standardized on WEBROOT SPY SWEEPER 5.0. We have dealt with all three companies for support and had to wait two weeks once for a response from PC Tools. OUR RECOMMENDATIONS None of the products offer complete protection. There is so much new Spyware out every week that it is impossible for all the companies to keep up with it all. The non-commercial companies like Ad-Aware and SpyBot do not have the resources that the Commercial Companies have and thus are clearly not as good in our tests and as show by our field work. We use a triple protection approach, use Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.0 as your Active (always on) Anti Spyware. Have LavaSoft's Ad-Aware 1.06 installed but not running as backup which you should run every week. If you think you were hit by something nasty or you continue to have problems after a Virus Scan and an Anti Spyware Scan, use the Free Ewido Network's Online Scan.
